About Phyllis Gustafson...

Narcisus Hawera in Erica Schumacher's Garden

Speaker - November meeting.

I am now mostly retired working just occasionally for a small wholesale nursery. In the past I worked 16 years for Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery in all parts of the operation but mostly propagating cuttings. Then for 9 years I ran a small seed business collecting and selling seed from the Siskiyou Mountains and surrounding southern OR and northern CA. I closed Rogue House Seed this past year when asked to co-author a book for Timber Press. "Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Wildflowers" is presently due for release in December 2005.

Over the years I have been very fortunate to travel to see gardens and native plants. My journeys have taken me to such diverse locations as the Rocky Mountains, England, Scotland, Czech Republic, Turkey, Greece, Alaska and this past summer the Wallowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon with the NARGS tours.

Išve worked in many capacities for NARGS. Išve been Chairperson (4 yrs), editor of the newsletter (7 yrs), and leader of field trips for Siskiyou Chapter (lots!). In 1997 I was co-chairman of the Western Winter Study Weekend and worked on the committee for the 2002 WWSW. I was on the Board of directors of NARGS 1991-1994, and Executive committee member at large 1988-1991. I was the Speakers Tour Manager 1998-2001.

I've spoken to numerous NARGS chapters, groups, and at study weekends. I spoke in San Francisco and Denver for Horticulture Magazine in 2002. I was co-leader of an AGS tour of mountains of northern California in 1996.

Our gardens include a perennial garden, small set of ponds with waterfall, four rock gardens and some shady areas. I love the alpine house and Potterage (new potting room) and continue to spend as much time as possible in the mountains.
